Stop Unwarranted destruction

Malta Independent Sunday, 4 June 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 21 years ago

I would like to draw the attention of the general public and the authorities concerned to a quarry that has been worked as a field in tal-Papa, Birzebbuga.

This field has been leased to my family for more than 50 years, first by the Church and later by the government. In it there are 130 fruit trees that have been planted over the years.

There are five wartime shelters used as water reservoirs and a big reservoir where a protected endemic frog has lived for all these years.

Now this field has been designated as an appropriate site in the new building scheme proposed by the government. The site is neither a pocket of land nor is it suitable for a road.

I feel that something must be done to protect life. I strongly believe that this field must be saved. We have up to 23 June. Please help us stop the destruction!
