During the Malta Union of Teachers biennial conference, MUT president John Bencini insisted for the setting up of a teachers’ council (TMID, 31 May).

This has been on the agenda for a number of years but it does not seem that the parties concerned are anywhere near coming to an agreement.

Mr Bencini pointed out that it is still to be decided what sort of council it should be and how it would work. Well, if this is the case – and I am in no doubt that it is – it will take us a long time to see this council materialise.

I am sure however that if all the stakeholders involved were to sit down together and discuss the issue, an accord will be in the making. The problem is whether there is a commitment for a Teachers’ Council to be set up. Once this commitment is there, a solution can be found quickly because everyone stands to gain from such an initiative.
