Brian Schembri In Assisi

Malta Independent Thursday, 8 June 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

Maestro Brian Schembri will be directing the Orchestra Regionale delle Marche and the choir Cappella Musicale della Patriarcale Basilica di San Francesco Assisi in the Upper Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi on 21 June.

The concert is a celebration of the International Day of Music but it will be a celebration on many levels. The celebration of Maltese talent is the one of relevance for the Maltese, however, content wise the concert will be a celebration of sacred music in a most holy setting.

The first piece will be Tota Pulchra that has some historical relevance for the Basilica itself. The composer of this work was Padre Alessandro Borroni who was a student of Rossini.

It is a piece that was evokes emotion and that was a favourite piece for Pope John Paul II. The other two works will be the Exultate, Jubilate and the Requiem by Mozart and this year being a year of Mozart commemorations it was only appropriate to opt for his genius to celebrate a day dedicated to Music.
