Malta Independent Sunday, 11 June 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 19 years ago

Current European and local snooker champion Alex Borg registered his fifth win from as many outings in the European Championships in Constanta, Romania when he beat Babbken Melkonian of Romania 4-0 yesterday.

His unbeaten record in the European Championship has now reached 17 matches as he won all his 12 matches in last year’s Championships in Poland.

Borg is leading Group A together with Jeff Cundy of England who has also won all his five matches. The two players meet today in a match that probably determines the group winner. Borg has also to play Gerrit bij de Leil of the Netherlands who is in third place with just one defeat. This match will be played also tomorrow at 1000hrs local time.

Meanwhile, in Group E, Simon Zammit registered a fine result after beating Republic of Ireland No. 1 player Brendan O’Donoghue 4-2. This was Zammit’s third win in four matches and he is currently in second place in the group together with the Irish player. Leading the group is Patrick Einsle of Germany.

Zammit’s last match in group E is today at 3pm against Rafal Jewtuch of Poland.
