World Cup Fever At Bay Street

Malta Independent Friday, 16 June 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 19 years ago

The launch of Bay Street’s novel World Cup event for children, the penalty shootouts, will be launched tomorrow.

Every Saturday, for the duration of the World Cup, between 10am and 2pm Bay Street, in conjunction with Eurosport, will be hosting a top-scorers league for children on the terrace at Level 4. Several children’s football nurseries will be participating including the Msida St Joseph Nursery, the Lija/Iklin Nursery, the Pembroke Atleta nursery as well as the Saviour Darmanin School of Goalkeeping and the D 6 handball team. Participants will be awarded medals and trophies sponsored by Eurosport.

A number of football personalities will also be joining in the fun. These include Malta National Team’s ex-goalkeeper Saviour Darmanin, Hibernians’ Andrew Cohen and Msida St Joseph’s Tyrone Farrugia, who is also the team captain for the national under-18 team.

The event is open to the public and children wanting to participate will donate Lm1 which will go towards the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, endorsed by the Bay Street Complex.

Timed to avoid clashes with any of the World Cup matches, penalty shootouts should serve as an original way for children to use their pent-up energy and emulate their heroes in an enjoyable way after a week of watching football on TV.

Following the PS session, the children and their parents may choose to watch the afternoon games on Bay Street’s huge screen or at any one of the food and beverage outlets which are all screening the football matches.

To launch this event, Bay Street will be hosting a Kids’ Disco today between 7.30pm and 10pm, at the newly opened non-alcoholic Exotika roof-top pool-bar.
