Earthquake Survivor

Malta Independent Friday, 16 June 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

Fr Jim, an American priest, has been working in Yogya for a number of years. Much of this time is taken up as a lecturer at the Sanata Dharma university, which luckily is situated on the north side of Yogya, while the hard hit areas of the earthquake are situated more to the south of the city.

Material aid from various agencies is already on the way. Fr Jim is asking for:

Prayers;

Articles (not bibliographical lists) on how to deal with post crisis trauma – “how to do it” sort of thing, especially when dealing with children;

Financial aid: This will help lecturers and students who have lost their homes to build them again as soon as possible so that they can continue with their studies. Money will also have a multiplier effect in that it will create jobs and make use of local material already available. One of the great strengths of the Javanese culture is the very strong and solid social networks at the family and neighbourhood level. One of their cherished concepts is “cukupan” which means: “Take only what you need and give the rest to others in greater need.”
