Contemporary Dance workshops

Malta Independent Saturday, 17 June 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

Contact Dance Company brings to you a contemporary dance workshop with Bawren Tavaziva, dancer, choreographer, musician and artistic director of Tavaziva Dance Company.

Bawren Tavaziva began his professional career with Tumbuka Dance Company in Harare, Zimbabwe. During this six-year period the company received critical acclaim for its African-influenced Western style and dynamic and energetic performances, bringing a fresh and inspiring approach to the African modern dance scene.

Bawren toured throughout Africa and western Europe, awarded a scholarship to attend the Montpellier choreographic Institute in France.

His training was eclectic, receiving a solid grounding in both Graham contemporary technique and classical ballet. In 1998 he was then selected by Neville Campbell – Phoenix Dance Company and performed with Sakoba Dance Theatre, Jazzxchange, Carol Brown and Union Dance Companies. He was invited to perform at the PAL Choreographic Dance Lab under the direction of Emilyn Claid.

Since 2001, he has been choreographing in the UK and developing a unique dance vocabulary fusing his own life experiences with those of his dance and cultural heritage.

Creating a language that personifies modern Africa, where the traditional and western influences have merged together. His heightened profile resulted in many commissions for various youth groups, arts council awards for professional choreographic development, a trailblazer fellowship from DanceUK/ADAD, Jackson’s Lane and the choreodrome at the Place Theatre to develop his work.

Workshops will be held at the Dance Workshop, Msida between 4–6pm, between 11 and 13 July. The fee is Lm35. There are limited places, early bookings advisable.

A Lm10 non-refundable deposit will secure a space.

Those interested can contact Francesca on 2137-2966 or 7940-3588 or by email to [email protected].
