A Gozitan man was yesterday fined Lm500 after being found guilty of causing the death of an elderly woman as a result of driving negligently.

Saviour Mifsud, 51, was found guilty of causing serious injury followed by death to Maria Conti on 16 January 1996.

The court, presided over by Magistrate Antonio Micallef Trigona, said that from evidence gathered, it turned out that the victim crossed the road to go to church when she was hit.

The court also said that the accused was driving well within the speed limit, but had failed in his duty to maintain a proper lookout.

He was therefore found guilty as charged and was fined Lm500.
