I first met Frans Baldacchino, il-Budaj, in person at the Razzett tal-Markiz in Mosta, when he performed a medley of folkloristic songs and recited Maltese poems he had composed. Although I could not understand the lyrics of his ghana or poems, I felt and loved the magic of his voice and expressions.

My Maltese husband, who had been so engrossed with il-Budaj’s witty performance, later translated the ghana for me and explained the impromptu responses of his duet. What a blessing that the very first ghana I heard in my life was that by Frans Baldacchino il-Budaj. I fell in love with this folkloristic style right away. He was so relaxed when he responded so wittily during the ghana, at times with a cheeky grin on his face.

We met il-Budaj on several occasions at Ir-Razett tal-Markiz and elsewhere, and he would always put out his hand and say politely: “How are you? Nice to meet you again. Come, have a drink.” The ever friendly, softly-spoken and humble superstar had such a pleasant disposition, that he was, and still is, loved by many.

Il-Budaj was not only a folkloristic artiste and a natural poet but also a natural artist. I had the opportunity to view his pencil drawings exhibited at Ir-Razzett tal-Markiz. A man filled with dignity and many talents, Il-Budaj certainly brought so much joy to many.

I salute Frans Baldacchino il-Budaj for upholding his cultural and traditional values and proudly presenting Maltese folkloristic ghana at local and international festivals. Therefore, I would like to address him as a national treasure. His departure is a great loss to us but his ghana, poems and art – not forgetting his good nature and the joy he brought to us – will remain in our hearts and will live forever.
