Public Holidays

Malta Independent Wednesday, 28 June 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 21 years ago

Currently a lot of debate is going on concerning the issue of Public Holidays.

Employers and economists are suggesting that the government should reduce our holidays in order to boost productivity.

Excluding the marvellous holidays enjoyed by some classes of employees who work on average 30 hours a week (ranging from minor staff to professionals), one must not forget that besides the vacation leave entitlement, public holidays remain the other necessary means of diversion for relieving the stressful pressures of everyday life.

On the other hand, one must also not forget that self-employed do not even have any vacation leave, although most of these people however, rarely declare that they earn more than Lm5,000 a year!

It is of utmost importance that before making any suggestions to the government, we all see what the real problem is.
