Malta Independent Wednesday, 28 June 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 21 years ago

Local website maltafootball.com yesterday reported that Hibernians will be taking part in the UEFA Futsal Cup.

It said 40 teams were taking part in what is the equivalent to the Champions League, but on a five-a-side basis.

Apart from Hibernians, clubs from Austria, Germany, Scotland, Sweden and Switzerland will all be represented for the first time in this competition.

The preliminary round will be held in mid-September where four mini-tournaments will be organised in Lithuania, Andorra, Bulgaria and Scotland. Hibernians will be taking part in one of these tournaments where four teams will be involved in each tournament.

The top team in each pool will join 20 others in October’s main round with the clubs being split into six groups of four.

Hibernians had won the Malta Championship after beating the previous champions Serbia 8-6 in the Championship play-offs.
