Photographs procured exclusively for The Malta Independent on Sunday and reproduced here, show the state of abandonment of the Marsa Shipyards.
Sources who spoke to this paper said that equipment worth hundreds of thousands of liri has been left to deteriorate in areas that have become little less than scrapyards.
The large tower crane that can be seen in the photo is out of commission at present due to a technical fault in its control system. Parts of the shipyard have been handed over to the Civil Protection Department while other areas are full of discarded vehicles including a state of the art fire engine that has been left to corrode away. Large cranes with the now defunct Malta Drydocks name painted on their yellow frame have also been abandoned.
