Bangladesh is an example of how Islam and democracy can work together and shows that Islam and terrorism are not linked, Labour Foreign Affairs spokesman Leo Brincat said during a meeting with the Bangladesh ambassador to Malta.
Both Dr Brincat and the Bangladesh ambassador agreed that several conflicts need to be resolved – first and foremost between Palestine and Israel – to reduce the divide between Muslim and non-Muslim countries.
Dr Brincat praised the work carried out in Bangladesh in the Organisation of Islamic Conference and said Muslim countries have an important role in foreign affairs since they represent over a quarter of member countries in the United Nations.
Both Dr Brincat and the ambassador condemned international terrorism, which leaves many innocent victims, and any form of extremism that threatens various religions and societies.
The ambassador pointed out that terrorists in Bangladesh killed several Muslims last year. Dr Brincat added that one of the victims of the terrorist attack in London last year was a Muslim of Bangladeshi descent.
