Malta Independent Tuesday, 18 July 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

A cleaner of a house in Attard was jailed for two years suspended for four after she was found guilty of stealing cash and jewellery.

Concetta Camilleri, 69, from Birzebbuga, was found guilty of theft after the house owner installed hidden cameras when they noticed that items had been going missing. She pleaded guilty to stealing an amount of cash and also jewellery to the detriment of family Debono in January 2002.

Magistrate Abigail Lofaro heard how the family installed hidden cameras to see where the cash was going and reported the cleaner to the police after seeing the footage. The court was also told that Mrs Camilleri and her husband were both pensioners and lived off a total pension of Lm188 per month.

Handing down her judgement, the magistrate noted that the last time Mrs Camilleri committed a crime was 45 years ago and she therefore handed down the suspended jail term.

Police inspectors Dennis Theuma and Simon Galea prosecuted while Dr Jose Herrera and Dr Veronique Dalli appeared for the defendant.
