FISEC Games: Opening Ceremony held in Kecskemet, as Maltese obtain mixed results on first day

The 58th edition of the FISEC Games opened yesterday in Kecscemt in Hungary.

Over 1200 athletes from fourteen different countries are taking part in this year’s edition. As usual the opening ceremony gave start to these games. The ceremony was held in the heart of the town of Kecskemet.

The chairman of the organising committee Pal Nyeste and the Mayor of Kecskemt Szecsi Gabor made the inaugural speeches.

The Games were officially opened by the FISEC International president Math Pietrs.

In the first competitions held yesterday the girls basketball team led by Trudy Hopgood beat Spain 48-35.

Our best scorer was Christine Grima with 18 points, Dana McKeon followed with 12, Emma Jane Moore scored ten and Leanne Sciberras notched seven points.

Malta’s girls basketball team will be in action again today against France.

Others athletes in action today will be the swimmers. Apart from swimming, athletics, tennis and table tennis will see Maltese youngsters in action.

In other events held yesterday, the handball team was beaten by Hungary 22-16. Malta’s best scorer was James Farrugia with four goals, with Chris Magro and Neville Borg scoring a brace.

Today the handball team under the guidance of Matthew Mamo and Milos Stanisavljevic will face Spain B.

In the futsal competition the Maltese boys suffered a heavy defeat 1-9 against Portugal. Malta’s only goal was cored by Luke Micallef. In their second match today the Maltese will be facing Spain A.

There were mixed fortunes for our athletes in the tennis competition. Denzil Agius beat Huib Massen of the Netherlands, 6-0, 6-1.

Jean Paul Schembri beat another Dutch opponent, Geoffrey Van Rheenen, 6-1, 6-1. Negative results came from Clayton Zammit and Gianni Selvaggi.

Clayton zammit lost against Hungarian Bence Smucer 1-6, 3-6, whilst Gianni selvaggi was beaten by Joris Getch from Holland 1-6, 2-6.

The Maltese tennis players under the guidance of coach Anthony Cilia Pisani, will also be back in action today.
