On Wednesday, the cruise liner The Voyager of the Seas visited Malta for the first time and will return to Grand Harbour seven more times, bringing with her about 25,000 tourists. This amazing ship, one of the largest in the world, is 310 metres long and one’s reaction on boarding it is “wow”. It is truly impressive.
“The Voyager of the Seas” is a floating city that has a golf court, an ice-skating rink, a rock-climbing wall (now a unique feature on some cruise liners of Royal Caribbean), a five-tier theatre, a Casino Royale, a library and a cinema spread out over 15 decks. Therefore, it is hardly likely that anyone of the 3,000 passengers will be bored.
More than 1,100 crew members make sure that your well-being is guaranteed. A staggering 22,000 meals are prepared every day, as well as 63,000 desserts a week, to supply the 11 restaurants on board.
A look at the amount of food consumed per week explains the 22,000 meals prepared: beef –19,000 lbs; chicken –18,000 lbs; lobster – 3500 lbs; fresh eggs – 75,000 pcs; fresh fruits – 45,000 lbs; Mixed Frozen – 85,000 lbs.
With just a small joystick the Captain Gerry Larsson-Fedde has sailed the 140,000-ton giant from Barcelona with ports of call at Villefranche, Civitavecchia and Palermo and Palma de Mallorca.
