Graffitti Speaks out against new American embassy at Ta’ Qali

Malta Independent Monday, 24 July 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Moviment Graffitti said that it is greatly dissatisfied with the decision taken by parliament with regard to the transfer of a large area of land (40 tumoli) at Ta’ Qali to be used as an American embassy, which area has been sold for the sum of Lm6 million.

In a statement, Moviment Graffitti said that it is also greatly concerned with the fact that such a large area of public land is going to be given to private hands for an amount of money, which though seemingly large for a common working class person is unsatisfactory when compared with the ever-rising price in property and the fact that land size in Malta is highly limited.

Another disconcerting factor with regard to this transfer of land is the fact that Malta can easily become utilised as a military base, particularly in times of conflict, which factor is highly imminent due to the politics of security adopted by the United States.

Ironically, the decision to transfer such a large amount of public Maltese land to the US was unanimously taken by both political parties. However, one asks how much has this decision really been taken in the interests of Maltese and Gozitan citizens, Graffitti said.
