Martina Xuereb won the athletics 300m final yesterday to become the first winner of a gold medal for Malta at the Games in Hungary.
She clocked 39.45 seconds, ahead of compatriot Francesca Xuereb who claimed the silver medal with a second placing.
Another silver medal was won by Martina and Francesca Xuereb, who together with Alessandra Pace and Julienne Grech, formed the Malta relay team which took part and finished second in the 4 x 100m. They clocked 50.42 seconds. In this event, Malta had to do without the injured Diane Borg who had to drop out, despite being in Hungary.
The boys team finished fifth in the 4 x 100m relay.
In another result in the discipline, Mark Bugeja finished sixth in the boys 100 metres.
Meanwhile, in the swimming competition, Francesca Paolella continued with her series of positive results adding two more medals to her tally.
First she finished third in the 100m freestyle to win a bronze medal. Then she finished second in the 100m breaststroke to claim the silver medal.
Nicole Cremona and Adrian Buttigieg were also successful. Cremona won a medal in the 50m backstroke clocking a record 33.36 seconds for her age group. Buttigieg won the silver medal in the 200m butterfly.
In the semi-finals of the 100m freestyle for girls, Talisa Pace also established an age group record, as she clocked 1.04.09. She qualified for the final.
The medal presentations to these swimmers were made by Louis Borg, vice president of FISEC International.
In the Futsal competition, Malta suffered a second defeat, this time going down 11-7 to Hungary.
The Maltese goals were scored by Christian Cacciattolo (4), Luke Fenech (2), Andre Gove and Fenridge Schembri.
Malta today will be meeting Spain’s B team.
In the table-tennis doubles competition, Malta suffered four defeats. It lost 3-2 to Spain, France and Holland and 3-0 against Romania. Following these results, Malta finished fourth, behind France, Romania, Spain, and ahead of Holland.
Two other defeats were registered in the handball competition. On Saturday evening the Maltese went down 27-20 against the Spanish B team. Yesterday morning, Malta lost 40-29 against Portugal.
In basketball, the girls team had a difficult time against the United States team losing 61-47. Best scorer for the Maltese was Christine Grima (18).
In the tennis competition, Clayton Zammit beat Jose Iziviado of Spain 6-4, 6-7, 6-2 but then lost to Renmertal of Holland 3-6, 2-6.
In the doubles event, Zammit and Denzil Agius beat Goetschoy and Hobb of Holland 6-4, 6-7, 6-3 while Gianni Selvagi and Jean Paul Schembri lost to Rhenner and Moscen of Holland 6-3, 4-6, 5-7.
