The 58th edition of the FISEC Games, this year held in Kecskemet in Hungary, came to an end yesterday with the closing ceremony in which the participating 1,200 athletes took part.

Malta finished eighth in the medals standings with three gold, eight silver and four bronze medals.

Leading the standings was Spain with 19-12-10; France were second on 15-13-21 and Great Britain followed on 10-16-7. Fourth were Hungary on 10-7-11. Fifth were Portugal, sixth Brazil and seventh Holland. The rest of those taking part failed to garner at least one medal.

The final medal was won yesterday by the tennis couple of Denzil Agius and Clayton Zammit who finished third in the competition. It was the only medal won in the tennis tournament.

Meanwhile, in the remaining events, Malta also registered its first win in the handball tournament as the boys beat Poland 35-18. Best scorers were Mark Borg, Andrea D’Amato, Chris Magro and Jerome Zammit with five goals each.

In basketball, Malta finished fifth after the girls team beat Portugal 52-44 in their last match. Emma Jane Moore was top scorer with 19 points.

In swimming, there were more national records.

In the 4 x 50 freestyle relay for girls, Melinda Sue Micallef, Giannella Gauci, Talisa Pace and Francesca Paolella, clocked a time of 1:56.54. In the same event for boys, Adrian Buttigieg, Larkin Mallia, Andrea Agius and Quelin Zammit registered a time of 1:51.54.

In table-tennis, Stephan Galea lost against Holland’s Tan 3-2 and 3-1 to both Medeira and Nunfa of Portugal.

Daniel Vella lost 3-0 against France’s Thibault, and 3-1 against Spain’s Garcia and Nunfa of Portugal.

In the FUTSAL competition, despite a 5-3 defeat against Holland, the Malta team finished third in the standings. The goals were scored by Chris Cacciattolo, Timmy Fleri Soler and Franridge Schembri.
