Sour Grapes

Malta Independent Friday, 28 July 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 21 years ago

Reference is made to Daphne Caruana Galizia’s article (TMID, 13 July). The author of this article was shocked that in Malta and Gozo, thousands upon thousands of Maltese supported Italy during the last World Cup. She even wrote that she found the flying of Italian and German flags by Maltese people particularly “offensive”. She made no mention whatsoever when thousands of Maltese who were supporting the English national team took to the streets waving the St George Flag to celebrate every time England won (three times). It is, of course, very evident that is was sour grapes for Daphne. I augur that during her lifetime, her favourite team would win the World Cup for three more times to be able, at least to equal Italy’s four World Cup titles.
