Played regularly on Sunday mornings at St Martin’s College, the second division of the H2Only Singles League has recently reached the end of its second and final round by assigning the respective title.
Mark Briffa (Shuttles BC) won the Second Division Singles title, with 11 out of a maximum 12 points. He preserved his unbeaten status throughout the six matches played, with five wins and a draw on his record.
The only point dropped by Briffa was in his second round encounter with team-mate James Bugeja, who ended his commitments in second place, two points behind him.
Bugeja ended his commitments with four wins and a draw out of six matches on his record; his only defeat was sustained in the first round encounter with the eventual title winner.
This division turned out to be a two-horse race between these two contenders, leaving little chance to the other two participants.
The final second division Singles table reads as follows: M. Briffa 11 points; J. Bugeja 9; J. Vella 4; F. Vella 0.
COMEBA meeting
The local Badminton Association will this week be taking part in the third meeting of the Confederation of Mediterranean Badminton (COMEBA) being held in the Moroccan city of Casablanca tomorrow. It will be represented by its General Secretary, John Attard.
This meeting will be a continuation of the first two COMEBA meetings held earlier in Rome and Hertogenbosch (Holland).
As its designation implies, COMEBA groups together most of the countries bordering the Mediterranean.
It was set up primarily to foster Badminton within the Mediterranean region while promoting the diverse interests of its member countries on the international Badminton scene.
In addition to Malta and the host country Morocco, ten badminton associations have already confirmed their presence at the meeting; these are: Algeria, Cyprus, Egypt, France, Gibraltar, Greece, Italy, Spain, Syria and Turkey.
The meeting will be electing COMEBA’s board of directors and will be discussing several issues of mutual interest to the participating countries.
COMEBA is gradually gaining momentum and is planning to organise an international competition – designated as the “Mediterranean Cup” – in the initial part of next year.
