The Criminal Court yesterday ordered the revocation of bail accorded to man as he had tried to escape the country.
Mr Justice Joseph Galea Debono ordered the revocation after hearing police inspector Chris Pullicino testify that he had caught David Norbert Schembri attempting to leave the island after a car chase on the coast road on 24 June.
Insp. Pullicino told the court that he had even fired warning shots to stop the accused, who was in a car belonging to another person. During the chase, the police saw him throw a packet of cigarettes out of the window.
In addition, they found that the accused had actually shaved his hair off as he was attempting to leave - so much so that the police found a bag full of hair shavings in the vehicle. In addition, they found a shaver and about EURO 18,000 hidden in Schembri’s trousers. The police also tracked down the cigarette packet, in which they found brown powder suspected to be heroin and bits of foil and lighters.
He was taken in for questioning by the police and admitted that he was going to leave Malta from the White Rocks area. He also admitted that the drugs were his. Mr Justice Joseph Galea Debono ordered that the accused’s bail be revoked.
