Maltese Sculpture adorns German town square

A sculpture by artist Antoine Farrugia from Mqabba has been erected in the main square of the German town of Fraunstein. The work of art, entitled ‘tHos’, was chosen, together with another three pieces, at the end of the European Sculpture Symposium that took place in Germany between June and July.

Thirty-four sculptors from across Europe participated in the event. The participants were divided into six groups across the country, with Farrugia working in the town of Zoblitz near the border with the Czech Republic.

Together with Jus Bearskins from Holland, Valor Topac from Turkey, and Fredrich Hofer and Tobias Gerstner from Germany, Farrugia spent 20 days working with serpentine stone, a green stone similar to marble for which this particular area of Germany is well known.

The works produced by the group working in Zobiltz were all scheduled to be included in an exhibition to be held in a sculpture park in Fraunstein, a larger town located some 40 kilometres from Zobiltz. However, the local authorities together wit the organisers of the symposium decided that four of the works, including Mr Farrugia’s, should instead be displayed in the main square of the town, where they could be appreciated by a greater number of people.

“I don’t think anyone can imagine how happy I was when my sculpture was chosen for the main square of the town. It is really a privilege to have your work appreciated so much and I hope that the people of Fraunstein, as well as all the visitors to the area, enjoy it. Maybe one day a similar symposium could be organised in Malta, giving artists from across the continent the opportunity to discover our own unique culture and heritage” said Farrugia.
