Perseid Meteor Shower

12 August at L-Ahrax tal-Mellieha

The Perseid meteor shower, an annual celestial event that is a favourite with Maltese sky-watchers, peaks on the night of 12-13 August this year. In a dark sky, observers can see 60 or more Perseids per hour. In 2006, however, observers will see far fewer due to light pollution from the moon (three days past full) lighting up the night sky. Faint Perseids appear as tiny, quick streaks. Occasional brighter ones may sail across the heavens for several seconds and leave brief trains of glowing smoke. Perseids can appear anywhere and everywhere in the sky, so the best direction to watch is wherever the sky is darkest. That same night, the largest asteroid (and the first to be discovered) 1 Ceres will be at opposition when it will be seen shining at magnitude 7.6 in the southern constellation Pisces Austrinus. The outer planets Neptune (magnitude 7.8) and Uranus (5.7) will reach opposition on 11 August and 5 September respectively. They will be located in the constellations Capricornus and Aquarius. Those at this activity will be able to see Ceres, Neptune and Uranus through the telescope, weather permitting, of course. A computer presentation about the Perseids will also be shown.
