Malta Independent Wednesday, 9 August 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 10 years ago

The young internationally acclaimed Greek pianist Panagiotis Trochopoulos will be giving a piano recital at the Temi Zammit Hall, Mediterranean Conference Centre, Valletta, as part of The Malta Arts Festival – Summer 2006.

The concert will take place tomorrow at 9pm. Panagiotis Trochopoulos will be replacing Maurizio Vallina, the pianist who was originally intended to give the recital, but who is unfortunately unable to do so.

Panagiotis Trochopoulos returns to Malta to perform at this year’s summer arts festival after his last performance here was highly acclaimed by Maltese critics. He will be interpreting Beethoven’s Sonata in E major, five preludes by Rachmaninov, Schumann’s Scenes from Childhood and three movements from Stravinsky’s Petroushka.

A graduate of the Moscow State Conservatory, Panagiotis studied with the famous Russian pianist Nikolai Petrov and attended master classes conducted by Epifanio Comis, Bernard Ringeissen, Jerome Rose, Jeffrey Siegel and Constantine P. Carambelas-Sgourdas.

With a repertoire that includes over 15 solo programmes and more than 20 concertos for piano and orchestra, he has performed in countries such as Russia, Italy, Germany, Austria, Romania and the USA. Among the

conductors with whom he has collaborated are Tomasz Bugaj, Murad Annamamedov, Ovidiu Balan, Grigor Palikarov and Octav Calleya.

In April 2005 Panagiotis gave the first performance of Pavel Pabst’s Piano Concerto with the Minsk Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Marius Stravinsky. The concert was recorded live by Cameo Classics music label and the compact disc will also include Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini. The pianist’s future plans include solo recordings for the same label featuring works by Anton Arensky, Sergei Rachmaninov and Igor Stravinsky, as well as performances worldwide.

The Malta Arts Festival – Summer 2006 is organised by the Malta Council for Culture and the Arts in collaboration with the Tourism and Culture Ministry. It is sponsored by HSBC Bank Malta plc, Valletta local council, Bank of Valletta plc and the Westin Dragonara Resort.
