Malta Team places third in Young Enterprise European competition

Malta Independent Friday, 11 August 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

Seed, the company from St Aloysius College who in July won Young Enterprise Malta’s HSBC Young Enterprise Company of the Year Award, have placed third in the European Young Enterprise Competition. This year’s European finals, which took place in Switzerland, were the largest ever with teams from 26 countries taking part. The first place went to the German company “Know It” while second place went to “Volli” from Estonia.

“When you consider the fact that Young Enterprise annually reaches some 1.7 million students across Europe, Seed’s great achievement in placing third becomes very evident. This latest success continues to strengthen the reputation of Young Enterprise Malta and of Maltese participants who, over the years, have always performed very well in this European competition,” said Young Enterprise chairman, Josef Camilleri.

Junior Achievement – Young Enterprise is, in fact, Europe’s largest network of organisations in the field of enterprise education. Its aim is to reach as many young people as possible with a full range of in-school and after-school programmes. The JA-YE philosophy can be summarised in two concepts: “Entrepreneurs are made, not born” and “learning by doing”. It uses hands-on experience to help young people understand how companies are run, and how to establish a new enterprise. In partnership with business and educators, JA-YE aims to bring the real world to students and, in the process, open their minds to their own potential.

“This year’s HSBC Company Programme attracted more students, creating more competition. The result was that a number of excellent companies emerged. Seed, with their innovative “mini green” were worthy winners, as this success at the European competition highlights. This success is not only great news for all the students who were part of Seed, but also renews the determination of everyone associated with YE to bring enterprise education to more young people in Malta,” said Young Enterprise chief executive, Karl Gouder.

Seed’s Mini Green is a small green house in which indoor plants can be grown and kept. The concept proved so successful that a leading gardening centre in Malta acquired several Mini Greens and, furthermore, the team has also sold its design to an international gardening company.
