Thailand’s Full moon party comes to Malta

Malta Independent Saturday, 12 August 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

Paradise Bay will be the venue for the Full Moon Party 2 on 10 September. The party will be a fusion of live performances, DJs, and other attractions that will blend in with the breezy décor of the venue to recreate the same vibe of the famous Koh Phangan full moon parties in Thailand. Haad Rin beach on the island of Koh Phangan is home to the Full Moon Party every month making the ultimate travellers get together in one of the best beach bashes in the world.

"While in Thailand five years ago, I had to go t the Full Moon party everyone had been telling me about. This will be my fifth fundraising event and this time all the funds will go towards Koperattiva Kummerc Gust (KKG) and Break on Through for abandoned dogs".

Koperattiva Kummerc Gust promotes development education, focusing on fair trade, enhances training to its members and offers educational sessions and workshops in schools and youth groups on a voluntary basis. KKG regularly sets up events that generate interest on a national level and are attended by members of the civil society, political representatives, religious representatives, the media and the general public. KKG's main activity is the running of the only fair trade shop in Malta, in Valletta. For further info visit www.l-arka.org.

Break on Through is led by Rennie Scicluna who is presently taking care of around 50 abandoned dogs in two sanctuaries in Pembroke and Bahar ic-Caghaq. I never met anyone who works so hard for abandoned dogs and who genuinely loves them to the point of sacrificing his life for them!

The event on 10 September will take us on a journey through ethnic, percussive and psychedelic sounds. Not to be missed is the highlight of the event which will see us through a mix of percussion and violin by Renzo Spiteri and Simon Vella.

Renzo Spiteri is an accomplished multi-percussionist who has toured extensively and shared the stage with artistes from Europe, West Africa, eastern Europe and Asia. He has earned international endorsements from world-leading instrument companies Toca Percussion and Paiste Cymbals, and is supported by Olimpus Music (Malta). For further information, visit www.renzospiteri.com.

Simon Vella is a great artist. He grew away from the classical violin and developed a style all of his own. He plays from jazz to fusion to rap and he enjoys doing so with a free spirit while putting strong emotions to his melodies. He has developed a passion for rhythms and his music is a clear reflection of this. In 2004 he launched his first album Different Scores and is presently working at his second album.

The event will kick off at 7pm starting with Owen Jay on the mix, followed by a live percussion jam by local travellers incorporated with a Capoeira show. Multi percussionist Renzo Spiteri will then play a fusion of African and Asian sounds. After Renzo's solo performance, we will be entertained by the innovative contemporary violinist Simon Vella.

The finale of the live performances will bring Renzo Spiteri on stage again who will join with violinist Simon Vella bringing us to the climax of the live performances. Following the sounds of percussion and violin together, Deejays N. Bone and Mertz Project will then entertain the crowd with a mixture of ethnic and psychedelic music. Stalls from L-Arka Fair Trade Shop will be set up on the beach selling world music and other forms of art. A one-hour Capoeira workshop starting at 8pm will be led by Sasha, the Ukrainian who brought the afro-Brazilian martial art based on dance on our shores. A bar and grill service will also be available at Paradise Bay Lido.

Entrance for the party will be just Lm2.50 and all the proceeds will go towards the two causes. I would like to thank the sponsors who contributed towards this event, including Paradise Bay Lido, Peg Publications, Nailene, Pix by Max photographic studio, The Sound System, Nexos Lighting, and Reciprocal Records.
