M. Mifsud of Mosta (TMID, 9 August) asked me whether I am proud that the team I support, Inter, will be wearing the scudetto on their shirts this season.
Inter were handed the title – their 14th in history – because the two teams that finished above them in the table were involved in irregular practices. Juventus were relegated to the Serie B while Milan were deducted 30 points, putting Inter in top place.
Yes, I believe that Inter deserved the title they were given by the federation. As Inter president Massimo Moratti said, the title went to honest people. I would go a step further and say that Inter deserved to be given the 2004-2005 title too, as after all the irregularities were committed in that season. That would have made it two in a row for Inter.
Of course, I would have loved to see my team winning the league on the field of play. But I do cherish the fact that they have been given the title of champions after all that happened in Italy over the past months.
I understand that this was only done because UEFA needed to have an Italian champion on its list. But on the whole, I truly believe that Inter deserve the title they were given.
