It was with a sense of amusement that I read Daphne Caruana Galizia's contribution on Sunday 13 August. The man from Iklin must have really made an impact on Daphne for her to have allocated a whole page attempting to obscure his opinion and that of many others, (without success – no doubt there are intelligent readers out there) considering the debate is taking place in another section of the press! Oops, no exclamation marks please... and no dots... Daphne doesn’t like them! Ironically, when yours truly met her highness at Ramon’s, (fictitious place) close to the yacht marina, all I perceived was one large exclamation mark!
In her “I know it all” attitude, Daphne reminds us that the man from Iklin is best known for writing against illegal immigration and continues “as though there is anyone in favour of it”. Now that she has spoken and that we’ve established that no one is in favour of illegal immigration, let us make sure that no one ever writes again on the subject!!!! (More exclamation marks). You see, there are the over-excited 12-year-olds who are full of life and still believe they can make a difference and then there are the self-righteous, self-proclaimed individuals with an 80-year-old mentality who take it upon themselves to explain to us simple people, what arrogance means. Arrogance, my dear Madam, is when someone believes he or she is qualified to explain to us simple people what it means!
Daphne can rest assured that her days will be busy writing full-page articles that are so highly intellectual (?) and sacrosanct (?) Should the question marks be in brackets? The reason for this is that there are and will be so many other readers of your newspaper and of another section of the press who agree with the man from Iklin. Yes, a lot of articles need to be written. The scale is tipping. As usual Daphne is missing the whole point even though it is there - plain and simple and easy to comprehend. Maybe she’s too busy counting the exclamation marks, question marks and dots.
The very essence of the George Cross (is salib ta Gorg - Salib Gorg is even worse) debate is this: People have all the right not to give the almighty glory and importance to the symbol of the George Cross, whether it was created by King George VI or Queen Daphne MLCCXI. That’s the crux of the whole subject! Is that all we have to show on out national flag, a war medal given by a foreign king? Oh, and it would please me so much to learn that Daphne is not worrying her little head about the educational system. Ever heard of diversity and what about different opinions? Don’t we live in a democratic system? (Oh no... the blessed question marks again!!!)
Why don’t we wake up and feel the breeze. It is slowly becoming windy and “Is salib” will eventually fly off from our much beloved Maltese flag, which deserves to be untainted.
