Drama And mystery in ‘Pupi’ on NET TV

Malta Independent Tuesday, 22 August 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Next October, Net TV will be presenting two drama series. On Monday nights it’s the second season of Santa Monika while on Tuesday, primetime, Net TV will present Pupi.

Pupi has all the ingredients to make it a hit with televiewers. There is drama tinged with mystery, with an undercurrent of unleashed violence throughout the 26 episodes.

Pupi takes place in just five days in October 1954. Malta was still trying to get back on its feet after the hard war years. While life in the cities was breaking from the old pre-war atmosphere, village life was still as it was many years before. Everything centred around the village square, with the church dominating over everybody. The village priest had to cope with every type of problem, be it material or spiritual. And in Pupi he has plenty of both on his hands.

When beautiful Gina (Antonella Galea Loffreda) returns to the village after a 10-year absence, all hell is unleashed on those who had used her in the past for their own pleasure. Now she is accompanied by Anna (Valentina Rossi), her 10-year-old daughter.

Why did Gina return to the village? Why are some men so afraid at her return? Who is Anna’s father?

They all have their own secrets which they have kept hidden from the prying villagers’ eyes. But Gina’s return looks as if it is the catalyst for these secrets to be brought out in the open, bringing shame to them all. One of them will even resort to murder to keep his secret buried down in the past.

Pupi, written by Joseph A. Cachia, also has its tender moments, when innocent love holds sway, when life was simple, when joy was just growing up, sharing a moment of happiness. It is produced by 26th frame and directed by Charles Stroud.
