Our Heritage

Malta Independent Wednesday, 23 August 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 21 years ago

It is sad to note that a Paleochristian catacomb, originally discovered by Sir Themistocles Zammit in 1912, has been rediscovered after 50 years in a traffic roundabout at Hal Resqun, close to the Malta International Airport (TMID, 17 August).

Why should something like this have to be “re-discovered”? Why was it hidden after being originally found nearly 100 years ago? Should it not have been protected there and then? Why did it have to be covered by debris and asphalt for so long, to the extent that the exact location of the catacomb was “lost” for many years?

Should we not take better care of the heritage that was left to us by our forefathers?
