In reference to Daphne Caruana Galizia’s article (TMID, 17 August), entitled Sweets from strange men, being a man, allow me to clarify some points about men.

The majority of men I know, myself included, do not feel the need to expose themselves in front of females at the beaches. Daphne implies that the majority of men run around eternally concerned about the size of their manhood and spend the rest of the time bossing women about and running the world to their detriment.

I feel that to generalise in that manner is insulting to most men. Women are truly wonderful members of humanity and not all men see women as sexual commodities. Women have many enviable qualities that men do not possess. We are different and both sexes have gifts that actually complement the other.

I personally feel it is wrong to match one against the other by taking the “we are better than them attitude”. This approach may inadvertently send the very wrong signals to men who read her article, pitting men against women even more, rather than promoting an atmosphere of understanding.

Child abuse is the most recent of horrendous acts that we are hearing much about these days. I feel that our authorities can do more to protect children from sexual abuse, and I encourage any measures to protect these little ones from such a terrible act of violence. We must also remember the most terrible acts of violence that is being brought upon countless defenceless babies in the womb because of abortion. It is here that Daphne’s incongruence speaks for itself; abortion is something that Daphne has conveniently chosen to define in the past as a “choice” or an as an “unwanted pregnancy” rather than what it actually is; the murder of a baby in its mother’s womb. We must all foster the fullest respect for women and men alike in all we do. We must work to remain congruent to maintain credibility; otherwise we run the serious risk of not being taken seriously, even on serious issues.
