Every Thursday evening during the summer months, Vittoriosa Lawn Tennis Club is a hive of activity with scores of children and youngsters enjoying themselves learning and practising tennis under the guidance of qualified coaches and experienced players.
The Summer Coaching Clinics were tried for the first time last year at VLTC and turned out to be very popular. This year, the clinics are similarly creating a lot of enthusaiasm among the young participants, much to the delight of their parents and friends who come to watch them.
The scope of these courses is to give the youngsters a way to relax in a safe and healthy environment after the strenuous schooling months and also to give them a chance to mix socially and make new friends.
At present no fewer than 50 youngsters are attending these courses regularly. Classes are divided into different categories according to age. Children between the ages of six and 10 are under the guidance of Mario Abdilla, who is the promoter of the course; youngsters between 11 and 12, who form the larger group, are coached by V.J. Balani and Rosanne Dimech, while those between 12 and 14 are trained by Chris Pace.
At the end of the course, participants will be given certificates of attendance during a reception to be held in mid-September.
