Abortion, Catholics And Politicians

Malta Independent Sunday, 17 September 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

To be pro-life and against abortion is natural. To be against abortion and not be pro-life is possible. To be against abortion and against giving the Constitutional right to life to the unborn child is a major contradiction.

Some claim that to be pro-life one has to be Christian or some form of Christian fundamentalist. These people are generally of the odd segment of those who claim to be against abortion personally, but not morally opposed to anyone else having the so-called right to kill their baby in the womb. They are also generally the most vociferous of the pro-abortion bunch, often insulting, even personally, anyone who thinks differently to them and so threatens their views on the matter. They will try to deflect the argument away from the actual debate, in this case, providing the unborn child with the same right to life under our Constitution as you and I have, by accusing (“holier than the pope”) by labelling (“fundamentalists”) and by insulting anyone who dare talk about protecting a baby’s life from a possible future of abortion (“foetus frenzy”).

Abortion is an abomination to those who dare to investigate the subject in any detail. It goes against the very principle of what is known as natural law, which tells the formed and informed person’s conscience that to kill a baby in its mother’s womb is a fundamental wrong. Indeed, Catholics do have a proud pro-life pedigree and both Catholics and Christians in general are the most active defenders of human life around the globe. However, to be pro- life is not some exclusive right owned solely by Christians.

Gift of Life has a membership base of pro-life supporters that runs into the thousands. Naturally, not all of these are Catholic or Christian. Though the founding members of Gift of Life are all committed and practicing Catholics, it should not surprise anyone that some volunteers, activists and helpers attached to the foundation do not share the same spiritual beliefs.

Just in case natural law is not sufficient to keep abortion away from our shores (as it has not been enough in countries all over the globe), as the platform for all our arguments, Gift of Life takes scientific facts, and therefore undeniable proven truths, to demonstrate the reality of the horror of abortion and to expose the truth behind the abortion culture and the enormous business racket that exists behind the chains of abortion clinics around the world.

Scientists throughout the world generally agree that life does indeed begin at conception. This fact alone, however, has not prevented abortion entering their countries in the past. In many of these countries, there is now a struggle to reverse the abortion trend as science progresses and confirms the truth about abortion, placing it at odds with the pro-abortion laws of those countries. With populations that are shrinking due to low birth rates, abortion is now threatening to wipe out or completely alter the demographics of certain countries, such as Russia, in just a single generation.

Pro-life issues are not just matters of spiritual beliefs; they affect us all to some degree.

Being pro-life is to be in favour of human life in all its stages of development. It works to place human life above all other priorities and elevates human life to its rightful place of dignity. It is an act of love towards the defenceless unborn child, the physically challenged, and the infirm or older person.

Being pro-life is the only real choice. Other so-called “choices” simply degrade human life.

The pro-life culture defends the very values that we all complain are being eroded away.

We MUST protect ourselves from this self-destructive slant towards human life that our world is lingering in.

It is a known fact that a country’s laws have a direct bearing on the attitudes of its citizens. Having a law that bans abortion is unquestionably necessary, and having the right to life from conception enshrined into the Constitution of Malta is essential if we are to continue to safeguard the life of the unborn child in Malta in the future.

Our politicians have a very important responsibility in this matter. Their decisions today will certainly determine whether or not, in the not too distant future, Malta will be stained by the mass murder on its shores of countless small human lives by abortion.
