Appreciation: Lewis Portelli

Malta Independent Saturday, 23 September 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

I could not believe my ears when a friend of mine gave me the shocking, sad news that Lewis Portelli passed away. Dear memories of him splashed into my mind. He has been a friend, a tutor and a colleague. A valued friend indeed. An enjoyable person to be around. A few days before, I met him. He was always busy as usual, but he was going for his holidays.

Lewis was blessed with wisdom, patience and an affable character. He was a sportsman, philanthropist, author of a good number of publications and counsellor. His smile characterised him. I can never forget the support he gave when I told him that together with others I intended to found the Spanish-Maltese Cultural Circle. His words of advice were so filled with enthusiasm.

Later on he willingly accepted the role of PRO of the new association. I must say that I am fortunate and proud to have earned his friendship. In these difficult times my mind and prayers go to Giusa, his beloved wife who stood by him day after day.

Lewis is now with his God and Blessed Mother Mary whom he loved so much, still ready to hear us and help us in our needs.
