How many of us had gone through the painful experience of infringing the traffic laws just once and being promptly caught by the long arm of the law, either by a hidden warden, a speed camera or a policeman on a motorbike all carrying out their duties in the most excellent way?

Well I must admit that some of our law enforcement systems are working very well. But this is not the case at Qormi in front of the Saint Sebastian Church, in Victory Street and St Bartholomew Street.

No matter how many times people (especially shoppers) park illegally, either for five minutes or indefinitely, it seems that no parking tickets are issued, given that this happens many times on a daily basis. Therefore, we could ask some questions: “Is constantly breaking the law tolerated here in Malta? Are our law enforcement officers and institutions reluctant to issue contravention tickets so as to not interfere with somebody’s business? Could cameras be used to eliminate such abuses?” (I’m sure they are already used in other parts of our island for such purposes)

I have contacted the Qormi local council a number of times in the past couple of years about this problem, but the majority, sometimes, did not even acknowledge me. Then I thought that maybe I should talk to the ADT, which I did, and was told: “... this is not our responsibility”. Then I wrote to the Commissioner of Police, and received no answer. I have also written letters to newspapers, which I’m sure loads of people have read, but no action has ever been taken.

In conclusion I would like to show my appreciation to all those law enforcement officers at all levels who really carry out their duties in the most practical and considerate of ways.
