An Underground system for Malta

Malta Independent Tuesday, 26 September 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

Dunstan Attard of Xemxija (TMID, 19 September) suggests a railway system for Malta that, in his opinion, would reduce traffic problems and make communication

easier.

I would go one step further and propose that all the necessary studies are carried out to see whether it is feasible to have an underground system in Malta.

The country is smaller in size than many cities that do have such a system and I believe that we could come up with something.

Of course, I understand that being so close to sea level makes it all the more difficult, but at the same time many underground services abroad cross rivers and therefore it would not be impossible to have such a system working in Malta.

Whether catering for 400,000 people makes the system financially viable is another factor. But, at the same time, I am sure that if we start with a few connections between the big cities, obviously including Valletta and Sliema, then we would already be solving part of the problem.
