Some years ago there was a remarkably successful campaign on local television aimed at encouraging drivers to give way to traffic from the right at roundabouts. As a result, the “I’m bigger than you, so I’m going first” mentality that used to prevail has, to a large extent, disappeared.

Is it too much to ask that a similar campaign be launched over the use of indicators? It is so irritating to be waiting to either turn onto a main road at a T-junction, or to go around a roundabout, and see a car approaching from the right turn into the road where you are waiting – without, of course, any signal that would have allowed you to move out.

I have long tended to lay the blame for this on driving instructors – and this was reinforced when I followed a learner driver on to the roundabout at the top of Telgha t’Alla u Ommu who had obviously not yet reached that part of driving lessons here when you are told what an indicator is for! Many years ago, in the UK, I was told on my first lesson.
