Medium And large enterprises

In 2004, there were 216 medium and large enterprises in Malta and they employed almost 35,500 people, according to the National Statistics Office.

Medium Enterprises are defined as firms employing between 50 and 249 people whereas Large Enterprises are those with a total number of employees exceeding 250. The sources utilised for the compilation of this release are the Business Register and the Annual Structural Business Statistics Survey.

Due to the need to preserve confidentiality of individual responses within a small population of firms, data is aggregated at the NACE Sectoral level.

In 2004, there were 216 Medium and Large enterprises in Malta. Of these the Manufacturing sector was the largest, followed by that for Hotels and Restaurants.

Employment in Medium and Large enterprises in 2004 stood at just under 35,500 persons with the Manufacturing sector being the largest employer, followed by the Hotels and Restaurants sector.

Total turnover was approximately Lm1,410 million, the highest turnover being recorded by the Manufacturing sector followed by that for Energy.

Total value added was approximately Lm365 million with Manufacturing generating the highest proportion, followed by the Transport, Storage And Communication Services sector.
