Five-a-side Football tournament for charity

Malta Independent Wednesday, 4 October 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 19 years ago

Last Saturday, the British High Commission joined forces with Razzett tal-Hbiberija to host a charity five-a-side football tournament. Alongside the British High Commission, other participating teams included Air Malta, Bank of Valletta, De la Rue, Maltapost, Melita Cable, Miller Distributors, Salvo Grima, Thomas Smith, Vodafone and the Austrian Embassy.

The tournament was held to raise funds to support the structured recreational therapies and educational activities that Razzett provides for people with disabilities. Focusing on ability, and not disability, Razzett’s programme of activities are directed at individualising the strengths of each person, and developing them further through leisure activities. With each team lending their support, the tournament raised over Lm1,000 in donations.

With teams divided into two leagues, League A proved extremely close, with Thomas Smith missing out on a place in the semi-final due to an inferior goal difference. Group B proved more clear-cut, with Air Malta and Bank of Valletta too powerful for the others. The semi-finals were very tight, but the superior quality of the Bank of Valletta and Air Malta squads ensured that it was they who met in the final. Without tournament top scorer Clifford Mifsud, injured early on in the final, Air Malta were always going to have their work cut out, and so it proved, with Bank of Valletta winning 2-1.

British High Commissioner Nick Archer presented the trophy to Bank of Valletta captain Stephen Mizzi.
