John Grech’s Passion for photography at Manoel Theatre

Malta Independent Wednesday, 4 October 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

Photographer John Grech will be demonstrating his flair for photography in a solo exhibition of 22 prints in the Manoel Theatre courtyard. The exhibition, with the theme The Gift of Fire, opens today and will remain open to the public until 23 October.

In the exhibition, John is presenting a collection of prints inspired by his love of the performing arts, especially the theatre. In fact, this exhibition will show how the nature of his photography has narrowed down his interest to two particular art forms, namely dance and music.

While conveying the passionate dynamics of the moving bodies and the dance of light and shade on the human form, his musically themed shots seek to capture the intimacy and sounds – all captured and distilled in one single instant.

“The intention is to give the viewer the feeling the images provoked when they were produced. Music and dance and the image, as every other art form, are a gift as much to the performer as to the audience.

“A gift, nevertheless, imbued with sacrifice as much as with passion. This is what spurred me to entitle this exhibition The Gift of Fire,” comments the artist.

Born in Malta on 26 June 1966, John studied Labour Studies and Philosophy at the University of Malta. His passion for photography began at a very young age and he has pursued it ever since.

In March this year, he had the opportunity to exhibit a collection of his work in Guanajuato, Mexico.
