Labour Plans for youth

Malta Independent Sunday, 8 October 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Labour leader Alfred Sant launched the party’s position paper on youth yesterday, along with spokesperson Justyne Caruana.

The plan includes a national youth scheme that offers special rates on public and private services to those in the scheme. A Labour administration may review the rates and tax ceilings for those purchasing their first house and increase VAT refunds on the first house. Young people who open their businesses will not pay NI contributions for the first two years.

A National Centre for Young People will be created as a space to hold conferences and meetings.

As regards Gozo, more back office work will be found for its young people and ETC courses offered in Malta will be offered in Gozo as well.

The Labour young

people’s organisation, Brigata Laburista, issued a statement expressing shock at seeing army weapons handled by children during last Sunday’s Open Day.

Marie Louise Coleiro Preca condemned the ‘discrimination’ suffered by over 75-year olds who are not given heart pills free, now that the Ombudsman has ruled this as being discriminatory.
