It is true that one will be in two minds whether to laugh or cry after hearing some of our professional media personnel on air.

If one listens to local broadcasting to have a laugh, then there is no better place. But on the other hand, if one relies on these sources to be up-to-date and informed, then I’m afraid some head scratching is inevitable

I mean how can one not laugh when someone says “gewwa

l-waterfront il-Belt”. “Gewwa” means inside. And can there be a place more outside and in the open than the Valletta Waterfront, I wonder?

Perhaps one would not expect the man in the street to pronounce certain words such as Worcester, High Wycombe, Reading and so on, correctly. But surely one would expect a TV/radio newscaster to do so. These people are expected to listen to the news on the BBC, Sky News, CNN or other decent TV/radio station before going on air. It is therefore disgusting, to say the least, to hear a TV newscaster on one of the political stations pronounce High Wycombe as “High Why Combi”, for example.
