Restoration Work on three chapels in Balzan

Throughout this year, the Restoration Section within the Resources and Infrastructure Ministry has carried out various restoration work in towns and villages all over Malta, Minister Zammit said yesterday.

Mr Zammit was visiting the final phases of restoration work on three chapels in Balzan.

The three chapels – also known as the three churches – were built in the 16th century and are dedicated to Our Lady of the Annunciation, St Roque and St Leonard.

Minister Zammit pointed out that the chapels required a lot of work as a thick layer of cement was applied after the stone was chipped. As a result, the stone had to be cleaned from any artificial deposits and repaired where necessary.

An important factor in the restoration of churches and chapels is the repairing and maintenance of the ceiling, said Mr Zammit. “The ceiling was examined closely to eliminate any possible leaks which will damage the internal structure.”

The restoration work is being carried out in collaboration with the Balzan parish which financed the materials used and the Works Division paid for the workmanship which amounted to around Lm5,000.
