How nice it was to read (TMID, 2 October) of two flamingos at Ghadira Nature Reserve.

If these islands were not a death trap for such beautiful birds, locals and tourists alike would enjoy the beauty of other such

visitors to these shores.

The reality is, of course, that already two hunters have attempted to break in and kill them, only being prevented from doing so by the intervention of the warden. Congratulations to him for his courage.

This mentality is certainly not going to improve, given the government’s latest attempt to curb illegal hunting, that is, if you can’t or won’t enforce the laws, then remove them. The logic is simple.

If there are no infringements you can’t break them. (As I write this letter I can hear guns that have been firing all morning).

Which brings me to the government’s meetings with harmless representatives (from which BirdLife is excluded) and technical/scientific people.

These meetings are, I assume, to formulate a case to support the retention of spring hunting.

This case should have been presented to the EU Commission on 4 September but, as always, was delayed for another two months.

With my anti-hunting organisation barred, only input from hunters and this pro-hunting government is going to be presented.

This is grossly unfair and undemocratic, particularly as most of the population is against hunting.

I only hope the EU Commission takes note of this when understanding this issue.
