Msida consolidated their position in the upper rungs of the table with an emphatic victory against St George’s who, however were by no means overwhelmed.

Newly returned Nwoke scored for Msida with Babatunde scoring the first although St George’s did have their own chances to score at least one goal.

High fliers Msida were expecting no less than the three points from this encounter against lowly St George’s who were firmly anchored at the bottom of the table alongside Pieta’ Hotspurs and Marsa who shared the spoils on Saturday. The Saints were looking to their Player of the month Babatunde and the irrepressible Zongo up front to marshall yet another match winning performance whilst St George’s were hoping that Do Nascimento would again turn in a creditable performance to galvanize his own team.

Msida began on the offensive with Zongo shooting just wide on 3 minutes as the third placed Saints looked for that early goal to set their minds at rest. The same Zongo also had a header on nine minutes but the ball went well wide as Msida continued piling up the pressure.

But St George’s were not to be discounted as they created two quick chances on 15 minutes with a Conceicao free- kick from 40 yards, tipped just over by Borg and a header by Schembri in the box from the resulting corner again saved by Borg.

Msida responded on 22 minutes with a shot by Babatunde that hit the side netting bringing a cry of ‘goal’ from the red and white support.

Msida should have scored on the half hour when Babatunde squared to Roderick Baldacchino whose low shot was somehow deflected away by the St George’s defence.

But the Saints finally managed to take the lead on 31 minutes when Babatunde turned beautifully in the box to slam past a helpless Gatt.

The Saints could have gone further ahead on 39 minutes when Babatunde squared to Pullicino in the box but the former Hibernians stalwart could not control adequately. However Msida were now in complete control of the encounter as St George’s could only sit back and defend to keep the result down to respectable levels. Still Do Nascimento could have actually equalized just before half -time but the Msida defence managed to clear the danger.

St George’s threatened again at the start of the second half with Do Nascimento in the clear but Borg came out to block again. Msida had chances of their own in the opening minutes of the half but could not conclude successfully.

The chance to double came on 23 minutes when Zongo’s corner found Pullicino whose header slammed against the post.

But just two minutes later, Msida finally put the game beyond doubt when Paul Fenech crossed to Nwoke who slammed home for a deserved 2-0 lead to the Saints.

Undoubtedly, the match went down a couple of gears after that as Msida administered their advantage with relative ease to chalk up another important victory in their quest for silverware this season.
