I was in Valletta on Saturday night along with thousands of Maltese people who literally filled our capital city to capacity.

It was pleasant to see Valletta so alive as it used to be, not so long ago. Bars opening up till late, restaurants full of people so much so that they were turning other customers away, and so much activity that had been missing for years.

I still think however, that the activity could have been organised better. It is possible that the organisers did not expect such a turnout, and therefore the traffic arrangements were not planned well.

Cars were locked in long traffic jams and there were people who literally gave up and turned back home – or went to another place – at the first available roundabout. It would have been better if a public transport system was set up and promoted well before the event.

Secondly, it would have also helped to have information desks at strategic points to direct people to the various activities that were taking place. As it happened, those who did not have a programme – from where could it be obtained? – found it hard to make their way to certain events.

Yet, all in all, the aim of the activity was reached. It had been years since Valletta saw so many people. For one night, our capital city was alive. This should happen more often.
