I fully agree with Matthew Caruana (TMID, 14 October) who wrote about his disappointment in not seeing carcades celebrating Malta’s victory against Hungary in the Euro 2008 qualifier played last Wednesday.

The Maltese national team made us all proud with their performance and the result they obtained, and therefore it would have been a fitting occasion for all of us to celebrate.

Unfortunately, we are a divided nation on many matters. On a national scale it is politics, on a local level it is parish pique, and even football is often something that divides – during the World Cup half of us are “English” and half of us are “Italians”.

Last Wednesday’s victory meant a victory for the whole of Malta, not for just a part of it, and it was an ideal occasion for us to make merry as one nation.

I take the opportunity to say well done to the national team and the technical staff for a splendid win.
