In the ladies category, Playvolley Blue won a close encounter against Flyers by 3 sets to 2 and faced X-Sel on Sunday for a place in the semi-finals of the Ghaqda Kittieba Sports Cup. The match was balanced with both teams fighting till the very end. Playvolley coach Alan Gauci changed rotations several times during the match with Celaine Muscat and Diandra Caruana alternating their setter roles. Dorianne Bonnici and Maria Demicoli had excellent performances for Playvolley. This match also saw the return of veteran Elaine Lanzon who will surely help Playvolley cause a few surprises this season. Flyers coach, Steve Farrugia opted to play spiker Lindsay Cordina in the libero position successfully enforcing his defense. Daniela Muscat had an excellent match but this was not enough to put Playvolley into the semi finals.

Kerygma had to fight to the very end against a young Aloysians Red side. Kerygma won this match 3-2. This is an encouraging result for Alosyians as they managed to keep last years champions at bay for most of the game. Kerygma took an early lead and raced to a 2 set advantage with their captain and setter Josef Pirotta in his best form. However, with a number of good rallies, Aloysians, led by David Cassar, managed to equalize at 2-2 thus forcing the match into the fifth set. However, the more experienced Kerygma won the fifth set thus winning the match and ending Aloysians dreams to reach the semi finals.

The semi-final of the Ghaqda Kittieba Sports Cup saw Playvolley Blue play against last years runners up, X-Sel in what to ended up to be a surprise win for Playvolley Blue. The first two sets really were completely favour of Playvolley Blue with X-Sel not managing to react. The sets ended 25-15 and 25-18. However the third set saw X-Sel fight back with Playvolley not showing the quality they started with. X-Sel managed to win the third set 25-15. However, the fourth set was disastrous for Claudio Coppini’s team as they were unable to keep their momentum as they lost to a very determined Playvolley 25-14.

The final of the ladies Ghaqda Kittieba Sports cup will be played next Saturday at the Cottonera Sports Complex at 3pm. Paola Hibs Candy will meet Playvolley Blue in an encounter that promises high expectations. Should Hibs Candy lose the match, a decided will be played on Sunday.

In the men’s section, Kerygma who are last years league winners took Fleur de Lys by storm. The latter were missing a number of key players, namely middle player Jonathan Chetcuti and outside spiker Eric Sciberras.

The lack of these experienced players was too much of a loss for Fleur de Lys as Kerygma easily won the match 3-0. The finals of the men’s section of the Ghaqda Kittieba Sports cup will be played next Saturday at 5pm at the Cottonera Sports Complex where Kerygma play against Aloysians Lipton in a rematch of last years knock out finals. Should Aloysians Lipton lose the game, a decider will be played on Sunday.
