In this week-end’s programme the highlight is the second match this afternoon, were Hibernians and Msida face each other for the second spot in the league table. At present Msida are enjoying a one point lead over the Paolites.

Undoubtedly Msida SJ under the guidance of coach Patrick Curmi had an incredible season so far, and although surprising, their position in the table is a just reward and the result of some splendid performances.

Their main assets are surely the three Nigerian imports, Babatunde, Nwoke and Zongo. Much of Msida’s fortunes depend on the form of these three players, and when they all hit top form they can be irresistible to any opponent.

Msida’s other signings like Pullicino and Scriha fitted in brilliantly making Msida a hard nut to crack.

Hibernians are still smarting from their defeat against leaders Marsaxlokk, a defeat that arrived with a late strike from their ex-stirker Haruna Doda. Robert Gatt’s outfit is playing some good football and can be considered as firm contestants for the final honours.

A keen tussle is expected this afternoon, were both sides can produce an entertaining match of attacking football.

In the other matches of the programme, lowly sides Pieta, Marsa and St George’s go in search of their first victory of the season. But all three will face uphill tasks and it would be a surprise if any one of them will manage to grab the three points at stake.

In the first match this afternoon, Marsa will face Valletta. Marsa were considered Valletta’s bogey team way back in the seventies and eighties, but today Valletta will surely start as hot favourites. Their Argentine striker Sebastian Monesterolo is expected to add to his impressive tally.

In tomorrow’s matches Birkirkara and Floriana should find no difficulty to in disposing of Pieta and St George’s respectively. The champions are in dire need of points and will surely go all out tomorrow to grab three precious points.

Even Floriana are expected to bag the three points at stake. The Greens are fighting desperately to avoid the relegation pool. In fact the battle for the sixth place seems to be the most interesting issue in the first phase of the season.
